Winners of IFLA Europe Youth Competition ‘Plane(t)Scape’ are announced!

IFLA Europe Celebrates Young Talent in “Plan(e)Tscape” Youth Competition

IFLA EUROPE – the European Region of International Federation of Landscape Architects Europe (IFLA Europe) is proud to announce the winners of its Youth Competition for Landscape Architecture Students and Young Professionals. The competition, themed “Plan(e)Tscape,” showcased innovative plant-based solutions to contemporary environmental challenges, highlighting the crucial role of emerging talent in shaping our future landscapes.

Across Category A: Conceptual Ideas/Projects (27 entries)

1st Place/Winner: Entry Terraforming the Black Mountain by Edouard BRENET and Elisa BUTTEZ, members of FFP French National Landscape Association and working for SLAP Paysage and Atelier Merchez – Urbanisme et Paysage, graduated from Ecole Nationale Superieure d’architecture et de paysage de Lille, France with 70 points.

Thomas Kerekes, Vice President of Communications for IFLA Europe, emphasized the significance of nurturing young talent in the field: “The foundation of our discipline lies in the creativity and vision of young landscape architecture students who continually elevate our profession. In these times of rapid climate change, we witness daily the critical importance of landscape architecture in mitigating environmental impacts and enhancing the quality of life for humans, flora, and fauna alike.”

Mr. Kerekes added, “We are thrilled to support the next generation of landscape architects through the IFLA EUROPE YOUTH Competition Awards. Their fresh perspectives and innovative approaches are essential in addressing the complex challenges we face. We look forward to seeing how these young professionals will shape our discipline in the years to come.”

The distinguished jury panel included:

• Urszula Forczek-Brataniec, Past IFLA Europe Secretary General and Professor at Krakow University of Technology
• Eszter Bakay, Member of Executive Board, ECLAS – European Council of Landscape Architecture Schools
• Hendrik Vanderkamp, Honorary President, ECTP-CEU – European Council of Spatial Planners
• Santiago Casanella, Regional Manager Southern Europe of Hunter Industries.

A sincere thank you to our distinguished jury members for their invaluable contributions and thoughtful deliberations throughout the competition. Their insights and guidance have played a crucial role in celebrating the creativity and vision of our emerging landscape architects. Special recognition also goes to Daniela Micanovic-Franckx, IFLA Europe Executive Secretary, for organising the Youth competition.

The “Plan(e)Tscape” competition highlighted the multifunctionality of plants and their diverse applications in combating environmental challenges. It underscored landscape architecture’s pivotal role in creating sustainable and healthy visions for our planet’s future. IFLA Europe congratulates all participants for their contributions to this important dialogue on the future of our built and natural environments and looks forward to the next edition of the youth competition in the coming years.
