IFLA Europe is proud to join Bauhaus4MED project, funded by the EU Interreg Euro-Med, which will contribute togreen transformation in the regional and local territories involved in the partnership by reinforcing citizens’ engagement in the creation of sustainable urban living areas. It will test innovative NEB solutions integrating sustainability, inclusion and aesthetic aspects into decision making process, for improvement of green living areas.
In particular, Bauhaus4MED promotes new co-creation spaces where politicians, architects, artists, students, entrepreneurs and designers work together to make buildings less wasteful and more sustainable. Results will have positive impact on 5 Euro-MED territories, where civil society driven “nodes” will regenerate urban spaces by testing green, participative and aesthetic solutions according to the key principles of the New European Bauhaus initiative.
The project is led by LP E-Zavod Ptuj, Slovenia and gathers 10 partners: Platoniq Spain, CrowdPolicy Athens, Greece, Faculty of Architecture Zagreb, Croatia and IFLA Europe as supporting experts as well as 5 partners – RCM Region of Central Macedonia, Greece, Marche Region Ancona, Italy, Regione Toscana Italy, City of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burgas Municipality, Bulgaria and LP E-Zavod Ptuj, Sloveniawho will identify participative green community challenges, use crowdsourcing to co-create solution ideas, run civic crowdfunding campaigns to co-finance solutions and use participative budgets to implement pilot solutions. Pilot solutions will be focused on circular building materials, regenerated green urban spaces, green products, or green lifestyle. Transferrable toolbox will be offered as a solution including best example catalogue, lessons learned and CROWDVOCACY digital tool combining crowdfunding, crowdsourcing and participative democracy principles, with aesthetic green design tailor-made solutions made for citizens’ better living. To mainstream New European Bauhaus principles into the decision-making process, and ensure long term sustainability, the regions/cities will develop green transformation action plans, using green, participative, and aesthetic principles.

Strengthening an innovative sustainable economy
Improving innovation capacities in our Mediterranean territories is a necessity to strengthen and consolidate a knowledge society. It will help us face future possible economic crisis. Projects under this mission will increase the capacities of public and private organisations to implement and coordinate Regional Innovation Strategies and reinforce the competitiveness of SMEs accelerating the transition to a circular and sustainable economy.
Protecting, restoring and valorising the natural environment and heritage
Nature contributes to a healthier and more resilient society. The preservation of ecosystems allows to mitigate natural disaster, diseases, boost resilience and regulate climate, thus reducing risks to human societies. Projects under this mission will promote climate change mitigation and adaptation measures and encourage the sustainable management of natural resources and restoration of degraded ecosystems.
Promoting green living areas
Sustainable development, management of living areas and an integrated vision of the territory energy transition are crucial to the quality of life of Mediterranean citizens. Projects will tackle this challenge through the development of greener living areas, and will work to minimise their impact on the Mediterranean and the global climate system focusing on air pollution, energy and mobility
Enhancing sustainable tourism
Tourism is a key sector in our territories, both in terms of protection and valorisation of the natural and cultural resources and support of its recovery. Projects will address the development of sustainable tourism as a transversal issue: fostering tourism integrated in circular economy, considering the sustainability of ecosystem services using innovation technologies, or promoting the preservation of natural resources and cultural heritage.
